Mercedes Benz’s Future Infotainment System

The newest and the most advanced infotainment system and technological features have a furious battle in the car industry today. The different car manufacturers are trying to develop such systems and enhanced their previous one just to be more viable in the market as well as bringing comfort to the passengers. One of the most known producers of good cars with reliable system, Mercedes Benz, is trying to bring their infotainment system into the next level. Cracking into the next generation of infotainment system is a plan that Mercedes will bring in the upcoming years. And this system is called the COMMAND, i-Drive or MMI. 3D technology is one of their future concepts in infotainment system as they are involved in researching 3D displays that could cover for potential systems. Unlike the previous voice commands, Mercedes engineers are working on voice commands with natural transcriptions. In just a simple command, anything would they say, in emails, text message or browsing. The new feature that they are trying to develop is the gesture control – handwriting recognition and gesture control for interior lighting.

Volvo’s Animal Avoidance System – To Avoid Accidents and Injuries

Safety is one of the most important aspects when developing a car. In connection with this, Volvo is trying to develop a system that can detect an animal on the road and will automatically brake to avoid collision. This concept is planned to implement in a car to avoid accidents because of animals. The system is based on a pedestrian detection with full auto brake design.

It needs a radar sensor and an infrared camera for this system to record traffic signals and situations. The team also makes sure that it can be used in the night as most of the accidents take place at dawn and dusk as well as the dark winter months. They have targeted that the system will operate in the normal rural highway speeds. Just in case the driver can’t entirely avoid the collision, the system has that capacity to slow down the car to avoid huge impact and serious injuries. The teams are now having their research about the different animals and their behavioral patterns at the safari park. Engineers are having some tests regarding the software, learn to recognize the animals and made some decision makings.

Volvo’s Sensus System

As generation’s passes by, technologies gets better and better, more improved and way advanced. Volvo has created a system that is way advanced compare to the other called the Sensus System. The features of this system depend on the type and specifications of a car thus a high level car can have its full feature. Installing a Sensus System in an S60/V60 gives a nice option to the entertainment system such as Bluetooth connection for music streaming, compatibility of an iPod/iPhone USB ports, auxiliary jacks, AM/FM analog radio and a disc slot. In terms of the video and audio specifications, it uses a widescreen 7-inch high resolution with a great T6 surround sound system. Video is supported by DivX and Xvid codecs that can be played through a USB stick. Voice recognition is also available in this system, just press the voice command button on the steering wheel and the list of the available commands will be displayed on the screen. This system doesn’t need voice tags to recognize when you search names into your phonebook and the recognition rates are quite high. As far as the navigation is concern it offers route calculation and lane guidance in the form of junction view are available in highway and free exits.

Toyota’s Social Networking System

In connection with this new generation, new technologies are hitting up the market rapidly same as the social networking sites that made every people connect to every part of the world with their love ones. Through the help of Salesforce.com and Microsoft, Toyota is developing a social networking service, same as people communicating on Facebook and Twitter – so the owners/driver can interact to their car. This system is called the Toyota Friend which maybe the start of the generation of talking cars. The said system is made only for Toyota owners which gives them extra comfort. Toyota demonstrate this one of a kind technology in their showroom, they use a Toyota Plug-in Prius Hybrid. When the owner plugs in the car to recharge it, the car replied “The charge will be completed by 2:15am, is that ok? See you tomorrow.” The conversation could be shared to another Toyota Friend user, Facebook, Twitter and other services. There are rumors that the system is run through sensors but the company did not give a full detail on how this technology built – content of the talking cars dialogue. The system will be first applied to electric cars and plug-in hybrid cars. The program is done through an open source cloud platform that could start in Japan in 2012.

Ford’s In-Car Health Assistance

The technological improvements and software development brings every system in this generation to the next level. Ford is now developing a system that can detect or monitor the health of humans. With the help of health and medical companies, Ford researchers are trying their best to link and improved in-car systems to have the capability to scan human health. Through wireless technology such as bluetooth they have made a prototype that can synchronize glucose monitoring system and other allergies.

For glucose monitoring system, it is important for the people that has diabetes to know and monitor their glucose level as this may result to blurry vision and confusion that can cause accidents. In collaboration of Meditronic and Ford, they have made a device that has the ability to observe glucose level. The result will be displayed on the monitor and after checking, the online system will look for remedies. In terms of allergy system, they’ve made a device that can gather data on how much pollen around the car. This is a positive sign to all the people that has asthma and other respiratory illness.

Unveiling Wireless Electric Car Charging System

Most of the car manufacturers nowadays are developing electric cars, thus other companies are trying to have a well-improved charging system. With the great teamwork of the New Zealand start-up HaloIPT and international engineering firm Arup, the system is having its first appearance UK; allowing electric cars to charge while they parked on the pad.

The company is aiming to have this system on the roads, garages and car parks to have easy access when a electric car needs to be charged. Information and statistics will surely be one of the materials in analyzing the ways on how the consumer uses this kind of systems. As the Chief Executive of HaloIPT Anthony Thomson said that one day, electric cars can do charging while running/driving. In addition, he said that it is just the first stage of a future charging technology as most of the people are adopting electric cars. Having an active charging gives electric car a big lift; totally avoiding the “stop and charge” factor using cables.

GM’s New Infotainment System – MyLink and IntelliLink

General Motors has finally unveiled their new car infotainment system. It is called the MyLink and IntelliLink infotainment system that is powered by smartphones. You can connect to its entertainment system through USB or Bluetooth. You can get great features when a smartphone is connected to the system such as voice activation, steering wheel controls and clean connection.  Just in case you don’t have a smartphone, you can still use its normal features like the CD player, iPod inputs and XM satellite radio by using touch screens or control buttons. Regarding with the voice activation they bring it to the next level as they have a competition to Ford; GM and Ford are using Nuance and Gracenote in connection to their entertainment and navigation system. In addition, there are optional features like the automatic crash response, diagnostics, airbag notification and 24-7 safety advisors (provide assistance in using the new feature). Though it is equipped with outstanding features, the navigation system is still limited, just like a Google maps in a phone that cannot be displayed on the car screen. As of now GM only allows two mobile apps for this platform, Pandora and Stitcher. Others are still in the process of approval, just like the iHeartRadio, Spotify and Mog.

MyLink will be presented in the 2012 Chevrolet Equinox and 2012 Chevrolet Volt (in Fall) and 2013 Chevrolet Malibu (next year) while IntelliLink are available in 2012 Buick, Veranos, LaCross and Regal.
